Sophos UTM Alternative

Sophos UTM is end of life.
Replace it with a firewall that has a roadmap.

Sophos UTM 9 and SG appliances reached end of life on June 30, 2026; standard support has ended, with temporary extensions for qualifying migration orders through December 31, 2026 at the latest. Compare Sophos XGS with FortiGate as the Sophos UTM alternative and review our fixed-fee migration service, from $6,500.

What Changed

Sophos UTM and SG hardware reached end of life on June 30, 2026.

Sophos published the UTM/SG lifecycle in March 2023: last renewal December 31, 2025, end of life and end of support June 30, 2026. Standard support has ended. Qualifying migration orders placed before June 30, 2026 carry a temporary extension, no later than December 31, 2026; check whether your appliance has one before planning the replacement. Sophos’s own path is a move to the XGS series, which runs a different operating system (Sophos Firewall OS) with a different management screen. Sophos provides a conversion tool for supported settings; you review the result and rebuild what did not convert.

Unsupported means unpatched

A firewall is the device most exposed to the internet on your network. After June 30, 2026, UTM 9 vulnerabilities are not fixed. Cyber-insurance questionnaires ask whether perimeter devices are supported; this one no longer is.

The Sophos path needs conversion and testing

Moving from UTM 9 to an XGS appliance means a new operating system, a new management console and a new way of writing rules. Sophos converts supported settings; you review, test and rebuild the rest. How much converts depends on your configuration, so compare the migration scope for XGS and FortiGate before you choose.

What carries over, what does not

Address lists, VLANs (the separate lanes that keep departments or guest Wi-Fi apart), routes and the encrypted tunnels to your other offices transfer to any platform with a conversion step. UTM-only features (the web application firewall, the email protection module, the Sophos RED remote-office boxes) each get a decision made with you: replace, retire or move elsewhere.

Typical timeline

Sizing and quote in week one, hardware lead time two to four weeks, the new firewall built and tested remotely before the visit, cutover in one after-hours window with the UTM kept powered so we can switch back if anything is wrong. Plan on six weeks from order to cutover for a single site, subject to hardware lead time and scheduling.

The Comparison

FortiGate against Sophos XGS for an SMB that must replace a UTM.

Both are capable firewalls. The differences that matter to a 20-to-200-person business: how fast the box stays once every security check is switched on, how staff connect from home now that SSL-VPN (the older remote-access method) is going away, how it is managed day to day, and how long the vendor will keep supporting it. Figures are from each vendor’s published datasheets and notices. If you run one office on a circuit up to 1 Gbps, start your FortiGate sizing at the FortiGate 70G.

We sell and support FortiGate; we do not sell Sophos. Read the table with that in mind, and verify the XGS figures on Sophos’s datasheet for the model you are quoted.

How We Migrate

UTM to FortiGate in five steps, with the UTM kept for rollback.

Replacing a Sophos UTM with a FortiGate is the fixed-fee firewall migration we publish on the firewall migration page, from $6,500 for a FortiGate up to the 90-series class and from $8,900 for 100F to 200F or an HA pair (two firewalls so one can fail without taking the office down), hardware and licenses separate. Moving your Sophos SSL-VPN users to ZTNA or IPsec is part of that migration within the agreed scope limits, with anything beyond them quoted after scoping; on its own, a ZTNA or SSL-VPN replacement is quoted after a short review of your users, rules and applications.

1. Export and read the UTM

Full UTM backup and configuration export. We read every rule, NAT, VPN and object and list what is in use versus what is dead. UTMs accumulate years of dead rules; we do not migrate those.

2. Size and quote

Circuit speed, user count, switches and APs, PoE needs, and which UTM modules are in use decide the FortiGate model. See the sizing guide. Hardware and the UTP bundle (the security and support subscriptions) are quoted by exact part number through our authorized Fortinet distributor; see FortiGate models and pricing.

3. Build it beside the UTM

The FortiGate is configured and tested in parallel: interfaces, VLANs, policies, NAT, IPsec peers, security profiles, and the remote-access replacement. A written test plan per critical application.

4. Cut over in a window

An after-hours window, usually under two hours, with the UTM powered and cabled for a five-minute rollback. We stay through the first business morning.

5. Hypercare and documentation

Five business days of priority response, then as-built documentation (the map of what is actually installed), config backup under version control, and monitoring if you take a managed plan, from $695 per site per month: automated monitoring, human response Mon–Fri, 8 AM–5 PM Pacific. See plans and pricing.

Career aggregate. The 20+ years and 300+ sites span the operator’s full network-only practice, including prior-employer engagements. 99.99% availability, about 53 minutes of downtime per year, is an architecture design target for engagements that fund full redundancy. It is not a service guarantee or uptime SLA. Contracted response times and service levels are defined in each customer agreement.

Where We Work

Sacramento, the Bay Area, and remote across California.

Configuration and testing happen remotely. Cutovers are remote-guided by default; on-site cutover is available in Sacramento, the Bay Area and San Jose and quoted with the migration. Local clients: see our Sacramento Fortinet MSP and Fortinet MSP in San Francisco pages. Replacing a non-Fortinet firewall? See firewall migration. Replacing an old FortiGate instead? See FortiGate end-of-life replacement. Want it watched afterward? See network monitoring. Not sure what you have? Start with a Network Risk Assessment.

FAQ

Sophos UTM alternative: questions before you replace an SG.

Is Sophos UTM 9 end of life?

Yes. Sophos announced the lifecycle in March 2023: the last renewal date was December 31, 2025 and end of life and end of support was June 30, 2026. UTM 9 and SG-series appliances no longer receive security updates or support after that date.

Can I keep running my Sophos SG after June 2026?

It will keep passing traffic. Standard support ended June 30, 2026; check whether your appliance has a temporary extension from a qualifying migration order (no later than December 31, 2026). Without one it is unpatched and unsupported. For a perimeter firewall that is the wrong place to accept risk, and cyber-insurance questionnaires now ask whether edge devices are under vendor support. If you want the exposure written down before you buy anything, a Network Risk Assessment gives you a report and plan you keep either way.

Do I have to move to Sophos XGS?

No. Sophos offers XGS as its migration path and ran promotions for it, but a UTM-to-XGS move is a different operating system and console, so it is a rebuild either way. That makes it a fair moment to compare FortiGate on inspection throughput, remote-access model, management, and five-year cost.

Will my UTM rules convert to a FortiGate?

Objects, interfaces, routes, NAT and IPsec definitions carry over through a conversion and review step. We rebuild the policy set by hand against the exported configuration, dropping dead rules, and test each critical application before cutover. UTM-specific modules such as the web application firewall or email protection are replaced or retired by decision, not silently dropped.

What does a Sophos to FortiGate migration cost?

The migration starts at $6,500 for a FortiGate up to the 90-series class and $8,900 for 100F to 200F or an HA pair, and the assessment sets the fixed fee. It includes full policy migration, VPN tunnels, a test plan, an after-hours cutover and five business days of hypercare (priority response while the new firewall settles in). Moving your SSL-VPN users to ZTNA or IPsec is included within the agreed migration scope limits; users, applications or identity work beyond those limits are quoted after scoping. Hardware and the FortiCare/UTP bundle (support plus security subscriptions) are quoted separately by exact part number; as a reference figure, a 70G with a three-year UTP bundle shows $3,644.78 on Fortinet's current Americas price list.

What happens to our Sophos SSL-VPN users?

FortiOS 7.6.3 removed SSL-VPN tunnel mode from every FortiGate model; we plan replacement remote access on IPsec or ZTNA through FortiClient. ZTNA checks who the user is and what device they are on for every app instead of handing over the whole network. We migrate the user population as part of the project, usually to ZTNA for staff and IPsec for site-to-site. See our SSL-VPN migration page for the method.

How long does the switch take?

Hardware lead time is the longest part, usually two to four weeks. Discovery and build run in parallel. The cutover itself is one window, typically under two hours, with rollback to the UTM available until you sign off.

Do you work with Sophos Central for our endpoints?

Yes. Replacing the firewall does not require replacing Intercept X on the endpoints. We integrate FortiGate with whatever endpoint and identity stack you already run.
